Petani Beach Kefalonia: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

If you’re traveling in Kefalonia and looking for a beach that feels like a proper reward, Petani Beach is your answer. Located about 45 minutes from Argostoli, the drive to Petani alone sets the tone — a sinuous road carved along the cliffs and coastline of western Kefalonia that’s nothing short of spectacular. Just know that stopping isn’t really an option; the road doesn’t give you anywhere to pull over, so you take it all in as you go, which honestly adds to the anticipation. You can also take a ferry to Petani to cut some of the driving, though it only shaves about five minutes off the trip, so for most visitors the scenic coastal road is the better choice.

When you finally arrive at Petani Beach, the first thing that hits you is the colour of the water. It’s that particular shade of blue-green that makes you question whether it’s real, the kind of photo that looks filtered but isn’t. One of the most photogenic beaches in Kefalonia, and honestly in all of Greece.

The beach is well organized. There’s a central zone where you can rent sun loungers and parasols at €20 at the time of my visit, and parking is €10. That said, like most beaches in Greece, you can park for free along the road leading down and bring your own setup. Plenty of people do exactly that, and there’s still room to find a good spot on the sand.

If you head to the far right end of Petani Beach, that’s your right when you’re in the water facing the shore, the terrain gets rockier and the crowd thins out considerably. The base of the cliff offers natural shade, which is a welcome bonus if you’re trying to escape the peak afternoon sun. The water drops deep fairly quickly across most of the beach, but that didn’t stop families. There were plenty of kids in the water having a great time.

Facilities at Petani Beach include two restaurants, bathrooms, and changing rooms. Nothing fancy, but everything you need for a full day out on one of Kefalonia’s best beaches.

Petani is the kind of beach that earns its reputation. The drive keeps the casual crowd away, which means those who make the effort are rewarded with something that still feels a little undiscovered, no small feat for a Greek island beach in peak summer.
