Just a few minutes south of Argostoli, in the Lassi area, sits Makris Gialos, one of the most popular beaches on the island. It’s a long stretch of golden sand wrapped around a calm bay, with the kind of shallow, clear water that makes it an easy favorite for families.

The beach is well organized, with parking, showers, and toilets on site, so it’s an easy one to spend a full day at without much planning. The sand slopes in gently, which is part of why it works so well for kids.

If you’re after more than sun and swimming, there’s a full lineup of water sports available for a fee: pédalos, including ones with water slides built in for the kids, tubing behind a boat, and a handful of other activities depending on which operator you go with. It’s an easy way to turn an afternoon at the beach into something a little more active.

For sunbeds, umbrellas, and food, head to Costa Costa beach, right on Makris Gialos. They’ve got a full setup of beach furniture and a restaurant on site, and it’s also where you book the water sports activities. Prices vary depending on the row and type of sunbed, so it’s worth asking before you settle in.

If you’d rather skip the rental, there’s plenty of room on the beach to bring your own towels and umbrella and set up for free.
