I find it harder and harder to find spots for brunch who impress me with a different kind of menu. It’s not that there is a lack of places to try in Montreal but as brunch is popular and that most of the time I don’t have the patience to wait too long, it does make my life a little more difficult. I know what you’ll say ”First World Problems” well I’ll assume it is what it is.

After trying a couple of other places on my list but that were full,  I headed out with a friend to try Brasserie Bernard. I had seen it a few times passing by and the French Bistro decor had got my attention. I had also looked at the menu and from the description it seem to have all the basics to satisfy my needs.

As mentioned before the French Bistro decor had got my attention and it totally also has the vibe. The crowd is a mix of all ages and the noise level is pretty low compare to lots of other places at brunch time.

After making our pick on the menu we received our coffee and orange juice and were treated to a nice piece of pain perdu. The orange juice is freshly squeeze and if you’re not a fan of pulp you might want to try another type of juice. From the minute we received our plates both me and my friend were impressed. I ordered a smoked ham and Gruyere Croque Madame that was nicely presented. It had more the look of a grilled cheese ,and I say this in a good way,  with a poached egg on top and it was definitely excellent. My friend ordered the omelette, let’s be clear on this subject tho, there are omelettes and ”Omelettes”. This one was well executed as you would expect from a French bistro, fluffy and delicious. Both meals came with a choice of salad or fries, and the fries were crispy and good.

Staff was very courteous and helpful and we were surprised that they still had available tables and no wait when we got there. It might be still a good kept secret in Outremont and if you are looking for a place for brunch I would recommend it.

  1. Congrats on the excellent blog, Seb! If I get to Montreal I would want to have that same Croque Madame. I love that sandwich and now I want one!
