It had been a while that I wanted to go try this new Mexican restaurant that opened on Union street, Escondite. Last minute decision on a Friday night after drinks led us to taking a chance as I was told that it was first come first served at the bar. Luckily when we got there they had room at a little diner counter which was perfect for me and my friend.
We started by ordering a round of El Chingón a drink made out of Wild Turkey Bourbon, Chamoy sirup and lime juice. I have to admit that I was not expecting such a well balanced cocktail fit for the best mixologist cocktail bars. Enjoying this cocktail and taking in the very cool decor of the place we made our choice for food.
We started with Guacamole and some Quesadilla Sincronizada de Hongos. Guacamole was very good and served with Morita tortilla chips that are like deep fried tortillas. The Quesadilla made with sauted mushrooms,Oaxaca cheese, aged cheddar and black truffle paste were also excellent, the truffle paste giving it an interesting taste without over powering the other flavors. We completed our meal with some Pollos Hermanos tacos made with deep fried chicken, Chipotle crema corn bread croutons and iceberg lettuce. We finished up the meal with an aged Mezcal Reposado, if you’re not familiar with Mezcal this one tastes more like a fine Scotch and had an hint of smokiness and has nothing to do with the one with the worm that you might have enjoyed on a spring break trip to Mexico. This is a great place if you want to have a good time with friends and prices are very reasonable. I strongly suggest a reservations by phone or Bookenda app as there was no room on my second tentative visit.
