On a recent trip to San Diego I was a couple of streets away from San Diego’s Little Italy. With my love for Italian food I was thrilled to have so many restaurants to choose from. One of the things I really like from the neighborhood was the diversity in food that they offer, sure they have a lot of Italian Cuisine but they also have other establishments to choose from.
One of them is Ironside Grill, I made a reservation as I saw walking around the neighborhood that everywhere is quite busy. The place is pretty big and has a lot of different seating to offer. From a front patio to tables and also a counter right in front of the an open kitchen. Decor is pretty cool too, high ceilings, lots of wood and a various antiques that adorn the walls.
Looking at the menu two things really caught my eye, first the Chowder Fries, second the Lobster Roll. Looking back I would have taken a half portion of the Chowder fries as it was a very big portion for one. If you’re two this would make a good appetizer for the both of you.
The Chowder Fries were great, fries covered clam chowder and pork. The mix was excellent and reminded me a little of our Montreal Poutine to a certain extend. Very filling but I managed to keep some room for the Lobster Roll. At first sight the roll seemed to lack lobster meat, but as I cut through it I was surprised with a generous portion of it. Taking the first bite I could totally taste the difference from your average roll just by the bread. The bread is a ”pain brioché” type that just brought it to a whole other level.
They also offer a lot of fresh fish options that looked very good as well as quite a few choices in their Raw bar including oysters, mussels, shrimp and Maine Lobster.
If you’re visiting San Diego definitely one of the spots to try.
