I attended a different type of event at BEVO, a fresh pasta workshop. It was pretty cool to listen to the chef, Giovanni Vella, explain to us how to do fresh Cavatelli’s. He actually show us step by step how to do it (recipe below). It was very fun to participate and do some Cavatellis myself and see how easy it was.
The reason I was invited was to try their fresh pasta has they have them every Tuesday. They change the type of pasta from week to week. Naturally you don’t have to eat pasta if you go there, they always have their pizza. I’ve had them many times and they are pretty good and they have a good selection. Back to the pasta the Cavatelli’s were very good, and not only because I help, just with tomato sauce, basil and olive oil they were very tasteful.
We also got to try some of their appetizers such as the antipasti, Rochetta and Parmesan salad, Arancini and charcuterie plater. The charcuterie platter changes from time to time but as the chef was explaining to us it takes quite a few months to cure the meat and they purchase the meat sometimes up to nine months prior to be served.
If you’ve never been to BEVO the place as a pretty cool vibe. High ceilings, stone walls mixed with the wooden tables just fits in together nicely. The bar area can also be pretty fun for 5@7 and get together with friends. They also have a nice street level quaint terasses that gives on St-Vincent Street but the street been pedestrian during the summer months is pretty quiet since it’s off the busy St-Paul street.
Here’s the recipe to make your own fresh Cavatelli from scratch, and as you’ll see the dough is not hard to make. On top of the ingredients you’ll need to get the Cavatelli maker which will run you about 35$.

Recipe for 6 people

  • 6 cups of flour
  • 1 1/2 cup of water
  • 3 tea spoons of olive oil
  • 1 tea spoon of baking soda
  • pinch of salt

Make your dough, then with a rolling pin flatten the dough to about 1/2 inch. Cut strips of again about 1/2 inch. Feed your strips in your Cavatelli maker and they will come out as they should be. Top with your favorite sauce and you are done.

You are now set to have some friends over and make a night out of it, it’s pretty cool to do and I’m pretty sure your friends will enjoy, I know my friends will. If cooking if not your thing well you can always visit our friends at BEVO and enjoy their fresh pasta.

Enjoy!!
